Bluebeard and his seven wives

This is based on the fairy tale Bluebeard. It’s about a wife who discovers her new husband had murdered his seven previous spouses.

Bigger version.

I love this. It’s super creepy and the detail is amazing.

Beautiful… but I do not understand where this idea of 7 wifes comes… in Perrault’s tale he doesn’t state how many wifes were in the room. In Paul Dukas opera «Ariane et Barbe-Bleue» (libretto by Maeterlink) the women found in the catacombs are 5 (and they’re alive) and in Béla Bartóks opera «Duke Bluebeard’s castle» (libretto by Béla Balázs) they are only 3 women behind the 7th door (here there are 7 doors, yes! – but not seven wifes). I’m working on the theme (Bluebeard’s wifes) and found your ilustration. Very nice.
